The looming crisis of student loan debt

The looming crisis of student loan debt

This is a very good article that has some truth to it. I know for me taking out student loans is the only way that I can afford to pay for college. It is very frustrating that sometimes student loan payments are as high as a car note. The frustrating part is that in most cases, none of us get jobs that are related to our degrees which means we are not making a high salary.

I think financial aid is important and it should be available to everyone but I think the repayment process needs to be reorganized. Most college students are in debt by the time that they graduate and can't even afford to make necessary purchases like a house or a car.

Building Social and Emotional Skills in Elementary Students: Passion and Strengths

http://www.edutopia.org/blog/elementary-social-emotional-curriculum-3-passion-randy-taran?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+EdutopiaNewContent+%28Edutopia%29&utm_content=Google+Reader

This was a very great article on building social and emotional skills in elementary students. Having a child in elementary. this article helped me. Our children face so much when they are in school. They have to not only focus on being a good student but this is the time that they build other key strengths as well. They live in a world that makes them believe in order to fit in, you have to follow the "norm" - whatever that is at the time. They deal with bullies and so many other negative things that can impact them if parents are not building their children up at home. It is our responsibility to encourage, motivate,   protect and instill values in our children. Some parents send their child to school and expect the teacher to do all of these things. I feel like the teacher should encourage and motivate children to do better but it starts at home.

Parents and Teachers: Turning Conflicts Into Partnerships

Parents and Teachers: Turning Conflicts into Partnerships

This is a great article that relates to the partnerships of parents and teachers. I think that it is very crucial for there to be a partnership with your childs teacher. Personally, I feel like it is important because 1) it shows your child that you care about their education and 2) it shows the teacher that you care. I feel that teachers and parents should be able to discuss things in a very respectable manner, the goal is to make sure the child is learning correctly.

I am a very active parent in my childs classroom. I think this makes it easier to have a conversation with the teacher if I have a disagreement about something. I also think it is important to be respectful to the teacher because it then sets an example to the child that they must always be respectful to their teacher.

Let's admit, kids do what they see being done, especially if their parents are doing it. Great Article, share your thoughts!

Student iPads

A Principal's Perspective: Getting The Most Out of Classroom iPads

This article is about high school students receiving iPads as a learning tool. I was attracted to this article because I was a part of a new pilot at my job where we issued our students with iPads. Personally I think this is a great idea if implemented correctly. With the advancement of technology all around us, I think students should use them as a resource for school.

I work with Executive students and this was the first year that we have issued iPads to students and I think it was a wise choice. The iPad allowed us to save money on printing course materials. Instead of carrying binders with up to 400 pages, they just carry their iPad that has electronic course materials with them. If students are traveling, they can always stay on top of their course work without carrying tons of books and binders around. iPads can be a valuable resource in my opinion.

Can Kindness be Taught?

Source: Can Kindness Be Taught?

This article focuses on whether kindness can be taught to children. In my opinion, I think that it can be taught. I think many children (or people for that matter) learn behaviors from those around them. If they see negativitity all of the time, then they tend to be negative. As a parent, I feel that it is my responsible to teach my child certain characteristics, and being kind is certainly one of them.

Internships Provide On-the-Job Learning

Source: Internships Provide On the Job Learning

This is a very great article about providing students with on the job learning opportunities. I think it is imperative for students to have the opportunity to intern in the field that they are interested in. I believe that internships should start as early as high school, as the article describes. In my opinion, it is never to early to experience real-world opportunities.

Tips for Parent Teacher Conferencing

Tips for Parent Teacher Conferencing

This was a great article with some helpful tips for conducting parent teacher conferences. I think parent teacher conferences are very valuable and contribute to the success of your child's educational journey.

I am not a teacher but as a parent I see that there is not always a lot of parental support and that really bothers me. I am proud to say that since I moved my daughter to a charter school, that I have seen the parental support increase dramatically. Every PTO meeting is packed to capacity, I have never witnessed anything like this before!

For the teachers, how do you encourage your parents to support your classroom and their child? Is it a difficult task or do you find it easy to get the support you need????
